I got a special Father’s Day Weekend treat to go droning with my son, Thomas, at Burlington Island with the Jersey Droners to make this Burlington Island drone video.
Location
Burlington Island is an uninhabited Island on the Delaware River near Trenton, NJ. It is about an hour from my home.
The irony is that this uninhabited island is the site of the first European settlement in New Jersey. The island was also the site of New Jersey first recorded homicide. In the early 1900’s, Island Beach Amusement Park was the island’s main attraction. A large 90 acre artificial lake consuming almost 1/4 of the Isalnd was created as a result of mining efforts.
Flight Experience
It was a cloudy day so the video was not spectacular. The best part of this experience was that my son was able to join me. He flew my Mavic Mini while I flew the Air 2s.
Thomas was excited to capture the wildlife. He was able to capture a dog swimming in the water and some ducks. I was proud of him and how good of a pilot he has become.
Unfortunately, the Mavic Mini kept throwing error messages. We reset the IMU, compass, and gimbal. But the error messages kept popping up. Finally, we decided to shut down flight operations with the Mini. We have since sent the Mini back to DJI for repair.
There were a few small boats and a jet ski that passed by. But none of the boats were too exciting. There was a rowing crew that made its way down the river, but they mostly floated by and were not rowing at the time. One of the Jersey Droners was flying the DJI FPV and the crew coach shouted from his megaphone not to get too close.
After flying at the boat ramp we went to another parking lot near the railroad tracks. There were some old abandoned warehouses near a modern Amazon warehouse. I did not include the warehouses in this video. I may need to make another video with these warehouses. I wanted to get a video clip of the train, but the train only seemed to pass by after I landed my drone. It happened twice.
Editing the Burlington Island Drone Video
I chose to edit this video in 1080p. I did this so that I could better crop the videos. I wanted to give the boats their distance, but by cropping the video it appears that I am closer than what I was.
The video was filmed in DLog. I bought some new Luts called Sky Luts from Film Poets. There are Luts that help you naturally render colors and other Luts that help you create a cinematic look. You can combine Luts for different creative looks. This was a good video to experiment because there was not great lighting. Overall, I was happy with these Luts and feel they were a good purchase. I will need to do another post to review them after I have had more time to evaluate.
Summary
Overall this was not one of the most exciting efforts in regards to flying the drone. But what I enjoyed most about this experience was sharing it with my son and trying out the new Luts to make the Burlington Island Drone Video.
