I am the pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Old Bridge, NJ. Last Saturday, we hosted our annual Easter Egg Hunt. I captured the event using my Mavic Mini and DJI Osmo Action Camera. It probably was not my best effort because I was also the event MC and led the music. So I did not entirely focus my effort on capturing the event. But I was able to capture what I captured for this Easter egg hunt drone video.
Because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, we were limited to 200 people at two separate sessions and held the event entirely outside. In previous years, we had other indoor activities. Typically, we would have a photo booth, craft, breakfast, music, and story-time. But this year, we did not do as much. We were fortunate that it was a clear day. The temperature was cool, but the sun was shining. I believe that everyone who came had a good time.
Regarding the technical aspects of the video, I included an establishing shot at the 0:13 mark where I added a cloud fly-through effect in Final Cut. I am planning on sharing a post on how to do this at a later time. So keep a watch out for that.
I also noticed that while I was doing a low fly-over of the Easter Eggs at the 0:29 mark, there is a prominent shadow from the drone. I did not notice it on the screen when I was filming, but it was certainly noticeable after the fact. My lesson learned is to pay more attention to the sun’s angle and the potential shadows that it might create when flying low.
It was the first time I flew at an event where there were people. The FAA does not allow you to fly a drone directly over people, so I was careful to stay clear.
One example of how I avoided flying over people was that I launched from my Minivan roof. I took the time-lapse at the 1:13 mark was directly above the Minivan. If you watch closely, you will notice the church building swaying. I didn’t notice that until I had uploaded the video to YouTube. The effect was the result of applying stabilization to the video using Final Cut. The wind was pushing the mini around as I attempted to get that clip.
I hope you enjoyed this Easter Egg Hunt Drone Video. Check out some of my other aerial videos posted on this site. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
