Edison Memorial Tower Location
I made a quick stop in Edison, NJ, to film the Thomas Alva Edison Memorial Tower in 4k. The tower was built in memory of this famous inventor and can be described as the world’s largest lightbulb.
The tower is located on the site of Edison’s Meno Park laboratory. But none of the original structures remain at this site. The present-day site includes a museum and is surrounded by a State Park. The tower was dedicated in 1938 and stands 131 ft tall. So it makes for a good subject for the drone.
Flight Experience
My daughter, Abby, had a track meet in South Plainfield, NJ, that I attended. On my way home, I made a quick stop in Edison at the tower. I did not stay very long. I was probably there less than a half-hour, and everything was taken with one battery.
The tower is located in a quiet neighborhood, and there was no one else around when I began filming. But a dad and his young daughter came and began to watch me before I finished. After I landed, I showed them my drone and shared a little about it.
I filmed with my DJI Air 2s. It was good experience to practice filming close up.
Edit
The challenge with this edit was that there was a single subject. It is hard to make a compelling video with one stationary subject. What I did was to film from multiple angles and distances. I mixed the close-up shots with the wide-angle panorama shots.
I think one of my favorite clips is flying backward from the monument not too far over the trees. As I back up the trees are swaying in the wind. It almost seems as if they are swaying in rhythm with the music.
It took a long time to edit this video. The most difficult part was finding enough clips to use to match the music. I did not have as much video to work with compared to a typical Jersey Droners mission.
I also filmed in DLog. There was some significant color correction going on in this video. It was late in the afternoon. The light was harsh. I had some trouble with exposure in several shots. There are a few where I blew the highlights, most notably on the overhead clip at the 1:33 mark. It was a challenge to get the lighting and color right.
I used a Fuji Film Lut on this video. It was an experiment I was doing after watching a YouTube video on the subject. The video said it was easy. And the process was easy. However, the tweaking was not.
Final Thoughts on Edison Memorial Tower in 4k
This was a fun mission. I wish that I had more time. But that seems to always be the challenge.
Considering all the things that Thomas Edison invented, it seemed appropriate to film the memorial site with a drone. It would be interesting to figure out how many parts of a drone have links to original Thomas Edison inventions. Of course, there are the lights. Even though they may be LED, we know where we can trace the origins of the lightbulb to Edison.
