Outerbridge Crossing and Perth Amboy

This is a 4k drone video of the Outerbridge Crossing and Perth Amboy at night. I met the Jersey Droners on a Friday night for Mission Hyperlapse in Perth Amboy near the Outerbridge Crossing. This was my first flight as a Part 107 Pilot.

Location

The Outerbridge connects New Jersey with Staten Island and is located near the southernmost point in New York. I always thought the Outerbridge was named as such because it was the furthest NYC bridge from the center of Manhattan. But it was actually named after the first Port Authority chairman whose last name was Outerbridge. A unique thing about this bridge is that it is not called a bridge, but a crossing. It would sound strange calling it the Outerbridge Bridge.

Flight Experience

This was a special event for me because I brought my son Thomas with me. This was his first event with the Jersey Droners, and he flew my Mavic Mini. He is a natural at the sticks. It is probably from all the video games he plays.

I planned to sell my Mavic Mini. But now that Thomas has a growing interest in the drone, I think I will keep it. It is a good excuse to keep a second drone on hand. You can’t have enough.

This was the first time I took my DJI Air 2s up at night. It is a bit of a challenge to fly at night. You can easily see the drone with the flashing lights. But what is hard to see is what else might be hiding the darkness. I did not want to get too low or too close to things that I could not see well. For example, I did not see the boat going under the bridge until I started editing the video on my computer.

Editing

I am amazed by the clarity and the color of the Air 2s. It helps to have the one-inch sensor to be able to capture more light at night. I recorded the video in 4K at 30fps using the Normal Color Mode and edited the video for 24fps using Final Cut. I adjusted the speed in a few of the clips. And reversed one of the clips to add a little variety. Did you notice the clip with the cars moving backward? I did very little to correct any color or exposure. Most of this video is straight from the camera.

This was my first time flying at this location, but it is close to home, so I will be sure to get back. I hope you enjoy this 4k drone video of the Outerbridge Crossing and Perth Amboy at night.
