I was recently asked, “Should I buy the Mavic Mini for my first drone?” The answer to that question is no. If I had to do it again, I would get the Mavic Mini 2 Fly More Combo as my first drone.
The Mavic Mini 2 is the upgraded version of the Mavic Mini. The Mini 2 records 4K video. The original Mini only records up to 2K video. The Mavic Mini 2 also has a longer flight time, greater wind resistance, and better video transmission to the controller. In short, the Mini 2 is a worthy upgrade from the original Mini.
There is not much difference in the cost. The Mini 2 Fly More Combo costs about $100 more than the Mini’s same package. If you are purchasing the Drone only, it is only a $50 difference. The Fly More Combo comes with extra batteries, which you will definitely want. As much as I regret not getting the Mini 2, I regretted not getting the Fly More Combo. I ended up spending more than I should have on accessories.
With that said, either Mini is a great way to get started without breaking the bank. They are both easy to fly and have all the same basic functionality of the more expensive drones. They are more than capable for most people and will be all you need. There are also cheaper drones available that are not DJI. But these will all come with compromises that are probably not worth the money you will save.
If you start to get more serious and start to bump up against the Mini’s limitations, you can easily upgrade to one of the other Mavic Drones. But there is a good chance that you will learn that the Mavic Mini 2 is capable enough.
You may also discover that you don’t have time to fly or that you don’t enjoy it as much as you thought you might. There are plenty of used drones for sale that people bought and thought they would fly more but are now mostly sitting in a closet. I am all for making sure this is something you will make use of before you pour too much money into it.
In summary, “Should I buy the Mavic Mini for my first drone?” No, get Mavic Mini 2 Fly More Combo.
